Support & development · handover and continuity
Change software partner without starting the product again.
You want a different development partner, less dependence on one supplier or a new support arrangement. Meanwhile, customers and employees still rely on the application. A useful handover therefore involves more than receiving source code.
Make handover demonstrable
The receiving team needs to work with it.
Access
Make source code, accounts and services accessible.
Understanding
Understand business rules, dependencies and unfinished work.
A first change
Build, test and deploy in a separate environment.
Responsibility
Take on operations, incidents and recovery arrangements.
Establish what is being transferred
We examine the application, its environment and the operations it supports. Which versions are in use? How are changes released? Who controls accounts and integrations? What knowledge sits with employees, the current partner or individual developers?
Where possible, we involve the existing provider alongside your internal team. The aim is to make knowledge transferable, not to judge earlier decisions without their context.
What the handover delivers
An assessment of the current position
A view of the relevant source code, environments, dependencies, business rules and outstanding risks. We also identify what cannot yet be accessed or reproduced. That determines which responsibilities we can accept and what needs to happen first.
A practical transition plan
The accounts, documents, data and agreements required, with an owner for each item. We define when responsibilities transfer, who handles incidents and how employees can raise questions.
A tested first change
Within the agreed scope, we build, test and release a limited change. This checks whether the environment and knowledge are sufficient to maintain the product. We then agree ongoing maintenance and development explicitly.
Keep access and knowledge with the business
A repository alone does not give you control over hosting, domains, distribution accounts or external services. We identify those dependencies and agree which access your organisation should hold. Ownership and licences need to reflect existing contractual arrangements.
Functional knowledge matters just as much. Why can an order no longer be changed in a certain state? Which exception does the finance team expect? We document those decisions with the people who understand them, so the product does not become dependent on another individual.
Assessment and takeover are separate commitments
Our incident-coordination review demonstrates assessment of existing software and processes. At a building materials supplier, we work on established applications alongside internal developers. Our experience covers both investigating an existing environment and taking responsibility for further development within it.
You can commission the assessment first. If the transition requires further documentation, access or remedial work, we incorporate that into the plan before accepting operational responsibility.
Read the software handover checklist or discuss your current situation. We begin with the information available and the continuity your business needs.
Your next step
What does your existing software need?
Tell us about the application, who maintains it and what you want to improve. We discuss a suitable initial assessment.
